Accreditation Update

Highland Community College is recognized by the Illinois Community College Board and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Highland has been accredited since 1973.

The College undergoes a regular self-study process as part of its commitment to accreditation and hosts on-site evaluations by an external HLC peer review team. In recent self-study reports, the College identified program-level assessment and systematic use of data as challenges the institution desired to improve. Following the most recent self-study in 2014, an HLC peer review team visited the campus in March 2017.

The HLC Board of Trustees agreed with the College's self-study and notified the College that it continues to be accredited. However, the College is on Notice for being at risk for non-compliance. This means that all requirements for continued accreditation have been met, but that one or more areas are in need of focused efforts.

The important message is that Highland Community College remains fully accredited. Additional information is available by clicking on the Higher Learning Commission logo. Highland will be posting updates to this web page as we work to continuously improve our program level assessment and systematic use of data over the next two years.

The College values the support of our stakeholders and encourages our community to follow our continuing progress. During this Notice period, the following remain unchanged:

  • Highland Community College is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
  • There are no changes to student eligibility for transfer or financial aid.
  • The high quality of education and services offered by Highland is unchanged.
  • Highland is fully committed to making improvements in our program level assessment process and systematic use of data.
