Chorale
This 80-voice mixed choir performs a variety of sacred and secular
music from the 16th century to the present. The Chorale tours biannually
with recent performances at Carnegie Hall in New York, St. Peter’s
Basilica in Rome, and the Dome Cathedral in Salzburg, Germany. The
Chorale is open to all singers in the College and the community.

Issues Club

Dance
Team
You can show off those choreographed moves during halftime performances
at the men’s home basketball games. Team members and the advisor
choreograph routines. A commitment to both fall and spring semesters
is needed, and the team practices twice a week. Previous poms and/or
dance background is helpful but not necessary.

Environmental
Awareness Group
Highland’s Environmental Awareness Group sponsors an Adopt-a-Highway
cleanup project in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The group also promotes environmental awareness by holding fund
raisers and donating money to local environmental organizations.

Highland
Chronicle
The Highland Chronicle, Highland Community College’s student
newspaper, provides students with professional work experience and
provides a voice for the students of HCC. Class times are on Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. in the Chronicle office,
located in the Marvin-Burt Liberal Arts Center, room M-242. The
class is free. Any student that takes the Journalism classes will
receive three credit hours in English.

Highland
Fellowship/Thirst
Highland Fellowship is a nondenominational, student-driven fellowship
and service group on campus. The purpose of the fellowship is to
build strong, supportive relationships in a spiritual environment.
Each semester the Highland Fellowship group coordinates weekly meetings,
campus presentations, and service projects that are based upon students’
interests, availability, and leadership. The group meets at noon
on Thursdays for 50 minutes.

Forensics
The Forensics Team competes in public speaking competitions on the
local, regional, state, and national level.

Club
This club lets you meet international students and guests and help
them feel welcome in an unfamiliar country while you learn about,
understand, and experience international cultures. This club meets
on a monthly basis and helps international students feel more comfortable
with northwest Illinois and with American culture.

Intramurals
A variety of intramural activities are offered during both fall
and spring semesters, including co-ed volleyball, co-ed basketball,
co-ed softball, etc. Students who participate in intramurals must
be enrolled in at least six credit hours at Highland. Intramural
schedules are posted during the fall and spring semesters on bulletin
boards in the Sports Center and the Student/Conference Center.

People of Color is a student group that focuses on providing social

Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the international honor society for community
college students. Highland students who have earned a minimum of
12 credit hours and are maintaining a GPA of 3.5 are eligible for
induction into the local Nu Mu Chapter. PTK recognizes and encourages
scholarship among associate degree students by providing opportunities
for developing leadership and service, exchanging ideas and ideals,
and stimulating interest in continuing academic excellence.

Prairie
Wind
The Prairie Wind is a literary tradition at Highland Community College
and an award-winning publication. The fine arts and humanities/social
sciences divisions team up annually to produce this full-color magazine,
which is a compilation of several artistic forms: literature, poetry,
artwork, and photography. Check out some of the creativity by viewing
covers of previous issues on the second floor of the Marvin-Burt
Liberal Arts Center. The Prairie Wind is a collaborative effort
involving students, Highland faculty and staff, and community members.

Scots
The Royal Scots are a 10-voice mixed ensemble with rhythm section
that performs a challenging and varied repertoire of jazz and jazz-influenced
popular music that emphasizes close vocal harmonies and improvisation.
The Royal Scots maintain a rigorous performance schedule, which
includes concerts, festivals and tours.

SkillsUSA
VICA
If you are a student enrolled in vocational classes, this is an
organization dedicated to building your leadership skills. You may
join at the regional level as well as the national level. You may
run for state office or compete in your chosen vocation as well
as other competition areas. Some contests go on to the international
level. SkillsUSA VICA holds local fund-raisers, charity assistance,
and other community projects. Meetings are held during class times.

Student Senate is a group of students from all walks of life who
act on behalf of the student body. This group of students is responsive

Theatre
The Theatre Department produces two plays in the fall semester and
at least one in the spring semester. Two or three productions, including
a musical, are performed during the summer. All plays are open to
student and community participation. Stop in the Fine Arts Department
office, room 59, to find out about pending production plans and
current production activities. Rehearsals are on Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00 and run five to six weeks.
