Soul is defined as the principle of life, feeling, thought and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part. I redefine soul for my landscape paintings as natural life, cultural history, and the power of Earth which the Illinois landscape forms into a distinct entity separate from the land we see; the spiritual part of the landscape as distinct from the physical part. Illinois Soul.

Im part of the Illinois landscape. Ive lived here forty-six years. Ive ate, slept and breathed nothing but Illinois, so naturally I paint it. I see the big sky, I walk the prairies and I climb the Burr Oaks. I fly with the swallows, I sleep in the grasses and I float down the rivers. I am the salt of the Earth. I am Illinois.
