HCC presents Spring Band and Youth Choir Concert

On Thursday, May 1, the Spring Band Concert with the HCC Concert Band and the Youth Choir will perform their spring instrumental and vocal concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center located on the Highland Campus.

Directed by Scott Stich, the Highland Concert Band will play an eclectic array of music, such as newer pieces called “Steel,” by Randall Standridge; “Night on Fire” by John Mackey and “Ye Banks and Braes O’Bonnie Doon” by Percy Grainger. The band will close the concert with “Stars and Stripes Forever,” by John Philip Sousa.

Stich said a pivotal piece of the concert will be the first movement of the Gordon Jacob, “Concerto for Bassoon,” with guest artist Emily Stich as the bassoon soloist.

Emily Stich, the bassoon soloist, is a student at Illinois Wesleyan University and the 2013 IWU Wind Ensemble Concerto winner and the 2014 IWU Henry Charles Concerto Aria winner.

Also performing for the evening concert is the Youth Choir, under the direction of Dagny Brandt. This performance is called “Jazz, A Swingin’ Celebration.” The Youth Choir is presenting different styles of jazz music, with small groups as soloists.

The concert is free and open to the public.
