HCC Adult Education to begin new classes at Freeport Housing Authority

FREEPORT—The Highland Community College Adult Education Department will open a second multi-level classroom at the Freeport Housing Authority (FHA) Monroe/Parkside Center, located near Taylor Park School. The class begins on March 5, and will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

“This new location allows HCC Adult Ed to offer GED programming in the community. By providing community-based programming, we can help address the lack of transportation barrier,” said Adult Education Director Mark Jansen. “This is the second GED program offered through a partnership with the Freeport Housing Authority. A third community program is offered through a partnership with Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency.”

The Freeport Housing Authority has collaborated with Highland Community College Adult Education Department since 2011 when it began offering GED classes at the FHA Westview property. According to FHA, this new partnership will help residents to complete their GED before the test changes occur January 1, 2014. The upcoming computerized test edition, in addition to increasing significantly in cost, will forfeit any partially-completed test results from previous years.

“These changes are all barriers to students, especially those with low-income such as Freeport Housing Authority residents,” said FHA Executive Director Larry Williams. “We strongly encourage any individual needing their GED to make 2013 the year to achieve this goal.”
