HCC Recognizes Outstanding 2011 Graduates

FREEPORT -- Highland Community College awarded 420 degrees and certificates at its annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14th, 2011.

Highland has over 12,000 graduates and has touched the lives of thousands more through adult and community education programs. Success stories abound, and the College enjoys recognizing the students who achieved academically and those who overcame the odds to achieve their dream of earning a college degree. A convocation ceremony and graduates picnic was held the Thursday preceding graduation at which faculty members and staff presented awards to outstanding students. The 2011 recipients demonstrate the diversity of goals and interests pursued by Highland students.

Bonnie Hale of Freeport received the Business Administration Award. Bonnie was one of three summa cum laude graduates this year, earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She tutored students in accounting, business and information technology classes. She plans to continue taking courses to complete an Associate of Arts degree and possibly transfer to Columbia College�s Freeport Campus.

Rebeccah Foust of Shannon was the recipient of the Fine Arts/Performing Arts Award. In addition to graduating magna cum laude, �Bekka� was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and was involved in numerous Fine Arts department ensembles and productions, including the Royal Scots, Chamber Singers, and Summerset Theatre. In the fall, Bekka plans to attend Elmhurst College in Madison, WI to pursue a degree in fine arts.

Jacob King of Dakota received the Fine Arts/Visual Arts Award. A magna cum laude graduate, Jacob was an active production staff member of The Prairie Wind magazine which contains original poetry, prose, visual art, and music contributed by students, staff, alumni, and other members of the Highland Community. Jacob also serves as a student worker for the Visual Arts department where his duties focused on assisting with installation and dismantling of gallery exhibits. funny cat pictures

Jori Caswell of Stockton received the Liberal Arts Award. Jori is well-known at HCC for her tutoring talents. She assisted students in the Success Center with various subjects such as English, art, astronomy and world religions. Jori completed an Associate of Arts degree and graduated magna cum laude. She plans to transfer to Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, NJ the fall.

Kaitlin Frank of Stockton was the recipient of the Life Science Award. Kaitlin graduated magna cum laude and participate in Phi Theta Kappa, the Honors Program and the HCC Big Band. She will be transferring to Clarke University in Dubuque, IA to study biology and physical therapy with plans to complete a Doctorate of Physical Therapy by 2016.

Gulzhazira Sultanova of Chicago received the Nursing Award. Jazira, as she is referred to on campus, graduated summa cum laude � earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average. An international student from Kyrgyzstan, a former republic of the Soviet Union, she chose Highland�s nursing program because of its quality and graduates� above average pass rate on licensing exams. She plans to gain some experience working as a nurse in a hospital setting before pursuing a bachelor�s and master�s degree in nursing. funny pictures

Haylee Endress of Shannon was presented the Physical Science Award. Haylee, who graduated magna cum laude, was Student Senate president, and participated in Phi Theta Kappa, the Society of Physics Students, EARTH, and the Honors Program. She plans to transfer to University of Illinois at Urbana�Champaign to attend the College of Veterinary Medicine and return to the area to practice as a large animal veterinary.

Jason Buss and Ebony McClellan, both of Freeport, were presented with the Citizenship Award by HCC President Dr. Joe M. Kanosky. funny images

Jason Buss was a member of Student Senate and served as the College�s representative on the Illinois Community College Board�s Student Advisory Committee. An Eagle Scout, Jason has served on the staff of Canyon Camp for the Boy Scouts of America and is an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 4 in Freeport. He serves his church as an usher and is on the Board of Trustees at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Jason plans to continue his education at Western Illinois University where he will major in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration and pursue a master�s degree in outdoor education. funny photos

Ebony McClellan has been a mentor and tutor for Project Succeed, a member of Student Senate, Vice President of Fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa, and a member of the Society of Physics Students and the Honors Program. She is a servant-leader at Crossroads Community Church, where she organizes and assists with outreach activities for the community. Ebony will transfer to University of Wisconsin � Madison this fall, and plans to pursue a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree with an emphasis in alternative therapy for Alzheimer�s patients.
