Highland to Provide Mental Health Services for Students

Freeport During their regular monthly meeting on January 20th, The Highland Community College Board of Trustees approved an agreement with FHN Family Counseling Center for the provision of student mental health assessments, consultation and training. The move comes as a part of a larger plan to serve students who may present behavioral risk concerns and provide for the health and safety of students and faculty on campus.

The agreement makes provisions for a qualified mental health professional to be on campus ten hours per week while classes are in session during the spring 09 semester. This will allow the college to provide initial assessment and referral services for students at no charge, as well as increased training and consultation related to student behavioral risk concerns for staff. funny picture quotes

Trustees also approved the new job description of Student Behavioral Intervention Officer. This comes following the Illinois Governors task force on campus security recommendation that college campuses provide access to immediate intervention to determine the level of care needed and to assess the degree of danger a student may present to self or others. This new position will help provide appropriate, crisis intervention response should it be necessary.

The FHN Family Counseling Center agreement and the Behavioral Intervention Officer position will be evaluated at the end of the spring semester for possible continuation. funny pictures

The college will utilize current full-time staff members who are trained counselors to fulfill the responsibilities of the new job description. They will meet with students in high need situations and provide additional support for faculty and staff who have concerns about a student or students. The behavioral intervention officers will be able to refer students to the qualified mental heath professional provided for by the agreement with FHN Family Counseling Center. funny images

In other business, Trustees approved the appointment of Sarah Miller as Administrative Applications Specialist. The position was approved in August as part of the colleges reorganization of the Instructional Technology services department. Ms. Miller has worked in Office Technology for over five years as a teaching assistant, secretary and instructor for the lab.

Students will also be able to access free tutoring by an English faculty member through the new Writing Center. Created as a result of the Humanities and Social Science divisions goal to provide students assistance in developing their writing skills beyond the help received in classes, English faculty will be selected to serve as tutors, providing writing instruction in the center. The Writing Center will begin serving students this semester and will be located inside the colleges Success Center located in the Marvin-Burt Liberal Arts Center. funny photos
