Trustees select Dr. Joe M. Kanosky as the sixth president of Highland Community College
FREEPORT— During today’s [May 23, 2006] regular board meeting, Board Chair Stephen Kroeger announced that the Trustees have selected Dr. Joe M. Kanosky as the sixth president of Highland Community College. He will be formally appointed president subject to successful contract negotiations at the June 20 meeting. Dr. Kanosky has served in several administrative positions, most recently as acting president, since he joined the college in 1981.
“Dr. Kanosky was the only internal candidate that stepped forward. After considering the implications of conducting a nation-wide search, the Trustees chose to review of Joe’s qualifications and skills. The process included a series of reference checks with community and college constituents. Joe has the right combination of skills and a history of service to Highland,” said Board Chair Stephen Kroeger.
Dr. Kanosky accepted the director of support services position in 1981 and then headed up the vocational/technical or business and technology division of the college for 13 years before transferring to the community and corporate education division in 1996. He became vice president for student and community services in 2000 and vice president for institutional and community development in 2003. He earned his doctorate in Educational Administration and Foundations in 1983 from Illinois State University. Kanosky holds a master’s degree in educational administration and foundations and a bachelor’s degree in English. He started his career as a high school English teacher.
During his tenure with Highland Community College, Dr. Kanosky has cultivated a broad range of experience within the college and in community service. Dr. Kanosky spearheaded the efforts to open the College’s satellite, Highland West. He has applied for and implemented several state and Federal government grants and led accreditation committees. Kanosky also served as chief of the administrative negotiating team for the 2003 – 2005 and 2005 – 2006 contracts. He served as a member of the Freeport School District 145 Board of Education from 1997 – 2005 and as president from 2001 – 2003. Among his many community interests, he is a member of the Freeport Noon Rotary, Vision 20/20, and Project 2009.
Dr. Kanosky intends to continue pursuing the College’s strategic plan and to follow-through on the re-accreditation process. “Because I have been a part of the Highland community for so long, I have the advantage of hitting the ground running. We are already focused on re-accreditation through AQIP and on achieving our strategic plans. That won’t change. My job is to guide and support the faculty and staff as they continue working to provide a quality educational experience in northwest Illinois.”
The announcement follows an eight-month interim period during which Trustees retained the Illinois Community College Trustees Association to develop a process for reviewing Kanosky’s skills. As the acting president and the only internal candidate, Trustees decided to conduct a thorough review of Kanosky’s qualifications and skills before opening a nation-wide search.
Dr. Kanosky’s appointment will be effective July 1 after a contract is finalized.
