HCC Trustees Accept Bids to Equip New Facilities

FREEPORT During their regularly scheduled meeting on December 16th, The Highland Community College Board of Trustees accepted a series of bids to equip the colleges two new facilities currently under construction. The project budgets of the Ray and Betty Stamm Health Science Nursing Wing and Wind Turbine Technician Training Center included amounts to outfit the new structures with advanced training and audio visual equipment.

Trustees approved a bid of $52,252 from Armstrong Medical Industries, Inc. to equip the Ray and Betty Stamm Health Science Nursing Wing with a series of simulation manikins to be used to train students in nursing, medical assistant and emergency medical technician programs. A series of infant, youth and adult patient simulators will be accompanied by control units that can simulate middle-range patient scenarios to provide health care students with real-world patient simulations. funny birthday pictures

While the new manikins are not as technologically advanced as the 'SimFamily' previously provided by FHN, they are essential in providing the number of simulators needed given the large number of students in the program, said Dr. Shannon Lizer, Highlands director of Nursing. They will give our students real-world practice to learn essential skills required in todays health care field.

Trustees also approved a bid of $25,944 from Armstrong Medical Industries, Inc for Atlas monitors. These advanced medical monitors will allow students in health care programs to train with technologies that are similar to those used in hospitals. The monitors simulate patient vital signs through different scenarios. According to Lizer, The monitors and manikans are significant because they allow for both training and evaluation of student learning using hands-on methods. funny pictures

The Wind Turbine Technician Training Center will receive industry quality hydraulic training equipment from Advanced Technologies Consultants, Inc. Trustees approved a bid of $166,980 for the equipment which will provide real-life training for students in the colleges Wind Turbine Technology program, the first of its kind in the state. The hydraulic training systems may also be used for customized training for technicians already in the wind industry as well as others in the field of manufacturing maintenance. funny images

According to Scott Anderson, Highlands dean of Business and Technology, The hydraulic systems control multiple moving parts in a wind turbine nacelle, not only in turning the entire nacelle into the wind, but there is also a hydraulic motor controller that adjusts the position of the blades to optimize their performance.

Both the Wind Turbine Technician Training Center and the Health Science Nursing Wing will be furnished with audio visual equipment through bids of $98,550.90 and $20,734 from Pratt Audio Visual & Video Corporation. LCD projectors, document cameras, computers, screens, DVD players and Smart Symposiums are included in the bids. The Smart Symposium devices will allow for engaging and interactive presentations and is powered by the same technology as the SmartBoard electronic whiteboard devices. funny photos
