Highland Graduate Selected to Participate in the NEW Leadership Institute

FREEPORT � Recent Highland Community College graduate, Charity Otte, will be attending the NEW Leadership Illinois Summer Institute held at the University of Illinois at Chicago from June 6 to June 11, 2010. Charity will participate in activities, seminars and workshops emphasizing the development of leadership abilities, policy skills, and political knowledge.

The NEW Leadership Illinois is a week-long, residential, expenses paid program sponsored by the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois and the Conference of Women Legislatures. The program selects approximately twenty female students from the state of Illinois with the goal of developing young women into effective leaders in public service careers. This year the main project is a mock legislative hearing of SB2288, an Illinois state Senate Bill currently being debated in the state legislature. funny pictures

Charity graduated summa cum laude from Highland on May 15th with an Associate of Arts degree and is transferring to Western Illinois University in the fall to pursue a bachelor�s degree in communications with minors in English and German. She submitted an extensive application before being selected as a participant for the program that included writing essays detailing her academic and community involvement as well as her interest in participating in the institute. funny images

�It�s going to be a very challenging,� said Otte. �I enjoy a challenge and expect to learn a lot. I am looking forward to meeting influential women whom I admire.�

Women interested in applying for the 2011 summer institute should be Illinois residents of junior or senior standing at a four-year college or university.
