Highland Community College to Offer Online Spanish Course

FREEPORT Beginning this fall, students interested in taking Elementary Spanish I (SPAN 155) at Highland Community College will have the option of taking the course online. This marks the first time that the college has offered a foreign language course via the World Wide Web. really funny pictures

We are seeing a growing number of students enrolling in online and hybrid courses in our division, said Thompson Brandt, dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. This Spanish course will be offered in the online format, meaning that students can complete the entire course from anywhere they have access to the internet. This differs from hybrid courses, which require students to come to campus for at lease one traditional class session during the semester, added Brandt. funny pictures

The multi-faceted course, taught by full-time faculty member Kent Johnson, will feature grammar activities, writing exercises, short films focusing on the culture of the Hispanic world, listening and comprehension activities, interactive activities, pronunciation activities, and exercises where the students record and submit their answers, directly online, for speaking practice. funny images

For local students interested in adding traditional face-to-face interaction, there will be two tutors available in the HCC Success Center to provide one-on-one tutoring services multiple hours per week. Dr. Johnson will also be available in the Success Center and students are welcome to stop in for additional assistance. funny photos

Another unique feature of the course is that it will be linked up with Probigua, a prestigious language school in Guatemala, so that those students who wish to pursue additional conversational practice may do so, one-on-one, with expert instructors via web-cam. This involves an additional fee for those choosing to take part. The cost is $8 an hour per lesson.

The materials for the course are superb, said Dr. Johnson. I believe anyone who signs up will greatly enjoy this first step towards learning Spanish.

There will be two sections offered with a total of 36 spots available. There are no pre-requisites for the course Current students register online via R.O.A.R., new students register by visiting For more information regarding the course, call email Kent Johnson at or call 815.599.3497
