Highland Community College Women's Basketball Bus Accident

On March 10, the Highland Community College Women's Basketball team of 16 players, coaches, and staff were returning to Freeport, Ill., from a NJCAA district play-off game against North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND. Around 6:45 p.m., the Cheeseman Coach bus crashed near St. Michael, Minn. The College leased bus transportation, and bus driver operation, from the Cheeseman Coach, Inc.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the bus left Interstate 94 for approximately 300-yards before coming to a stop. The driver and five individuals were transported to hospitals in Monticello, Minn. The five individuals have since been released from medical treatment.

"Our players, coaches, and staff went through such a traumatic incident last night, and we are so thankful for the fast response to the emergency and medical crews who were quickly on the scene to respond," said Highland Community College President, Tim Hood. "From moments after learning about the incident to right now, we are concentrating on the physical and emotional support to the team following this terrible accident."
