Antonio Vazquez

"My goal is to improve my academic knowledge and improve my life.  Education equals freedom," states Antonio Vazquez.

Vazquez entered the Adult Education Program at Highland Community College in January 2015.  He requested individual math tutoring in addition to classroom instruction since his math was at the intermediate low level.  His math skills improved dramatically as his questions were answered and he learned mathematical terminology and strategies.  Vazquez says his life and employment are easier now due to his increased knowledge and the tools he possesses.

Since math tutoring was so successful, Vazquez started reading and writing tutoring in the fall of 2015.

Vazquez works full-time, has a part-time job, attends a multi-level ABE/ASE class and receives tutoring.  He is currently reading Becoming Dr. Q by Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, MD.  The story of a man who went from being a migrant farm worker to becoming a brain surgeon inspires and challenges Vazquez in his quest for learning.  Vazquez noted, “If he can do it, why not everyone else.”

Bernard Hicks

“These people make the world more positive, and I want to be part of it.  Tutoring is just plain fun!”

Bernard Hicks has been tutoring low level math students since 2010.  Hicks combats his students’ math fears and frustrations with a mix of humor, enthusiasm, wisdom, and interest in their everyday lives.

Students enjoy working with Hicks because of his ability to establish rapport and help them understand math.  One student voiced his appreciation when he said that Hicks is a friend in addition to being a tutor.

Hicks states, “The people I’ve met are super people needing a hand up.  They are good people.”
