English-as-a-Second-Language

If English is not your first language, you may enroll in free ESL offered by Highland Community College. Enroll online today.

You will take an oral test and a reading test during your first session that helps determine your English abilities. After the test, you will start in one of our classes:

Beginning
If you speak little or no English, you will start at a beginning level. The emphasis is on survival English such as being able to fill out a form, talk on the phone or ask questions to get help. You will also learn to answer some basic questions.

Intermediate
If you understand simple phrases such as “Fill out this form,” or “How do I get a taxi?” then you are probably ready for intermediate ESL. This level focuses on writing phrases and some short sentences, talking on the phone, and reading simple materials related to basic needs such as want ads and information about school registration.

Advanced
If you understand most conversations at a normal speed, have control of basic grammar, and function independently in most social and work situations, then you are likely ready for the advanced level. The emphasis is on grammar, fluency in conversation, and understanding radio, TV and phone conversations with little or no help.

Additional Classes in Freeport
In Freeport we also offer Pronunciation Class to increase oral language development.

Free Transportation and Childcare
ESL students may receive free childcare provided by the Even Start program for parents of children 0 – 8 years who are enrolled in our classes. The Adult Education Department also provides free van transportation to and from classes for people living within the city limits of Freeport. Please mention this offer if you need these additional services.
